Love my visits to Rixon! Annie has been fantastic working with me to reinvigorate my hairstyle and is always lovely to chat with.
The team are always so hospitable in looking after their clients with tea, coffee and chocolate freckles too! I'm also loving the new Rixon app which makes it so easy to book an appointment.

First time having my hair coloured and had several questions about it, but Annie had answers for all of it. She told me to trust the process and it turned out to be the best ever!!! All the staff were so kind and full of energy, loved the vibe! Thanks Annie for this amazing work!

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Rixon today. Ian, the stylist I worked with, was amazing—so knowledgeable, genuinely lovely, and had a great sense of humour. He took the time to explain the causes of my hair breakage and offered really helpful tips for the future. The whole team was incredibly kind, and the salon had such a positive, friendly vibe. I can’t recommend them enough!

My first visit to Ian on a friend's recommendation and it was wonderful. From my first phone call making the appointment, to Brea who did my highlights, Macky who was friendly and checking how I was doing and Ian who gave me the best haircut I've had for ages, they were all amazing & friendly. The salon has a happy, efficient vibe - thanks everyone for making the experience awesome.

I am from Brisbane. Just wanted a wash and blow dry. They were so kind and welcoming to me. Even though I was passing through Geelong. The Salon has a great vibe. All the Staff were extremely friendly. They put some TLC into my hair. Very grateful at such short notice. Thankyou. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hey there, hair warriors! As a stylist at Rixon Hairdressing, I see countless clients battling the dreaded duo of itch and flakes. Let’s face it: a healthy scalp is the secret weapon for stunning hair, and it can be pretty frustrating when that foundation feels under attack. But fear not! This post is your battle cry against the common enemies that plague your scalp. We’ll unveil the culprits, debunk myths, and arm you with practical solutions to bring back scalp serenity.
Dandruff: From Snowflakes to Smooth Sailing
Meet the Usual Suspects:
First, let’s introduce the most frequent itchy and flaky foes:
Dandruff: The notorious one characterised by those white or yellowish flakes and mild itch. It’s often caused by an overgrowth of a friendly fungus called Malassezia, which usually lives on our scalps.
Seborrheic Dermatitis: This inflammatory condition creates red, itchy patches with greasy, yellowish scales. It often favours areas with more oil glands, like the scalp, eyebrows, and sides of the nose.
Psoriasis: An autoimmune disorder causing red, scaly patches on the skin and scalp. Scalp psoriasis can be itchy, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful.
Eczema: This chronic skin condition manifests as dry, itchy, inflamed patches that can affect the scalp. Irritants, allergens, or stress can trigger it.
Dry Scalp: Dry Scalp is not a specific condition but a symptom of various factors like cold weather, harsh shampoos, or dehydration. It can lead to both itching and flaking.
Myth Busters: Time to Set the Record Straight!
Before we unleash our arsenal of solutions, let’s clear up some common misconceptions:
Myth: Dandruff is caused by poor hygiene.
Fact: While infrequent washing can contribute, dandruff is primarily caused by a specific fungus, not dirt.
Myth: All dandruff shampoos are created equal.
Fact: Different dandruff types require different approaches. Choose a shampoo for your specific needs, like those with zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, or ketoconazole for dandruff, coal tar, or corticosteroids for seborrheic dermatitis.
Myth: Greasy hair causes dandruff.
Fact: While oily scalps can sometimes be associated with dandruff, it’s not always the case. Dry scalps can also experience flaking.
Taming the Itch & Flakes: Your Personalized Battle Plan
Now, onto the good stuff – how to fight against these scalp woes!
Targeted Hair Care: Ditch the one-size-fits-all approach. At Rixon Hairdressing, we believe in personalised solutions. We’ll help you choose gentle, fragrance-free shampoos and conditioners formulated for your specific scalp concern. Look for ingredients like zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, or ketoconazole for dandruff, coal tar, or corticosteroids for seborrheic dermatitis.
Scalp Scrubs: Gentle exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, promoting a healthier scalp environment. We recommend gentle scrubs explicitly designed for the scalp and advise against harsh or frequent use.
Dietary Tweaks: While not a cure-all, specific dietary changes can support scalp health. Consider increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids (think fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseeds) and probiotics (yogurt, kimchi). Reduce processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats.
Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate scalp issues. Life can be hectic, but incorporating relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can help manage stress levels and improve scalp health.
Seek Professional Help: If your scalp problems persist or worsen despite home remedies, don’t hesitate to consult a dermatologist or trichologist. They can diagnose the underlying cause and recommend personalised treatment plans. Remember, we’re here to support you every step of the way!
Remember: Consistency is key! Be patient and follow your chosen treatment plan for optimal results. Book an appointment with any of our trained professionals, or just call in for more advice.
Bonus Tips:
Avoid hot water washes: Opt for lukewarm water to avoid stripping your scalp of its natural oils.
Pat dry, don’t rub: Harsh towel drying can irritate the scalp. Gently pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel.
Minimise heat styling: Excessive heat styling can damage the scalp and exacerbate flaking. Air-drying whenever possible is always a good idea.
Manage hair accessories: Clean headbands, brushes, and combs regularly to prevent the spread of fungus or bacteria.
Listen to your scalp: Pay attention to what triggers your scalp issues and avoid those triggers as much as possible.
